GuideView technology is designed to provide  multi-modal ‘how-to’ advice and teaching for performing procedures of all kinds. Currently it runs on multiple Windows-based platforms including cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants. Other mobile platforms such as Java-based cell phones and iPhone are under development. In GuideView, procedure assistance is presented in a structured interactive step-by-step format that includes text, voice, pictures, video/animation at every step. At each step, the system provides enough information to perform that one task and then presents just a few alternatives to proceed to the next step. These GuideViews comprise an easy-to-use rich information environment typically created by experts in the field.

They are not intended to be used for clinical purposes. Depending on the particular user environment the guidelines for treating the same clinical condition can vary widely. GuideView Author can be used to easily create guideviews appropriate to the desired environment and language".

There is no limit on the kind of expertise that can be presented. GuideViews can be in anything from automobile repair to medicine.  

GuideView runs on multiple platforms including the web, stand-alone Windows, Pocket PCs, and cell phones.

Depending on the platform, GuideView supports voice commands, direct connection to sensors, and communications to remote expertise. For example, the cell phone version will automatically call a stored telephone number in case the task exceeds the capabilities of the stored guideline.

GuideViews are typically created by experts using the Author component. The system consists of two components: GuideView Author and GuideView Player. The Author system enables creation, editing, and update of GuideViews in a GUI editor based on a flow chart model. Voice/sounds, video, animations, and pictures (created separately) can be integrated into a GuideView using the Author. Because the software strictly separates content from presentation, the voice, text, videos can be in any language.  

How it Works

GuideView-compatible content is created by clinicians and experts using GuideView Author. This can be stored and distributed on media appropriate to the target platform. For example,mini SD-cards for use on cell-phones.

This is a GUI-tool that enables guideline creation and integration of multimodal content.

Integration with an EMR:

On the PocketPC, GuideView has been integrated in a context-sensitive way with BMIST-J, the PDA-based Electronic Medical Record System developed by TATRC.

Support for Multiple Languages:

The GuideView Author and Viewer are language-independent. Text, video, voice instructions, animations can be produced in any language and integrated using GuideView Author. These can then be executed using the GuideView viewer.
